Lecture 14 Maoz and Russet article. Read. Link between democracy and war. Lack of war between  democratical powers. Very hard to find. Definition of war sometimes in conflict. Near misses.  Hostility v. actual combat/  Democratic peace hypothesis.  Contrast with conflict with non  democracies. 1. Normative explanations: a. Emphasis on value, ie individual life, norms of resolving conflicts. With conflicting norms  more likely to start war 2. Structural explanations: a. What are the institutional checks and balances preventing war i. Dictatorship: one person declaration ii. Democracy: more checks for prevention of war. 3. Article goes through testing the various theory and the refinement  a. First that checks data to support one or other theories 4. M&R a. Normative i. States externalized the norms of behavior that develops within and characterize  their domestic political institutions. ii. A only applies to the extent where both party shares similar norms. Clash  between democratic and nondemocratic norm, the latter prevails.
