Madison BuechterCHEM 121 LSection 0223 Mar 2016Spectroscopy of the Hydrogen AtomAbstractWe analyzed the emission spectrum for Hydrogen and Helium. To observe these spectra, we excited Hydrogen and Helium gas.IntroductionIn this lab, we observed the emission spectra of atoms and molecules using spectroscopy. Specifically, we looked at Hydrogen and Helium. We used a spectroscope, a two tubes containing the gases, and a power supply to excite the gases.Experimental DataPlace the Hydrogen discharge tube into the power supply and align it with the entrance slit on the spectroscope and adjust until there is a bright and narrow source line Align the scope so the non-diffracted light source line is in the vertical crosshair, read and record the angle ϴ0Rotate the scope until one of the spectral lines is aligned with the vertical crosshair, and make an angle reading, ϴRepeat for the rest of Hydrogen’s spectral lines
