Madison BuechterCHEM 121 LSection 0217 Feb 2016Synthesis of Magnesium OxideAbstractMagnesium was oxidized using a crucible and a bunsen burner to form Magnesium oxide, then the empirical formula was found using a comparison of the masses before and after the combustion reaction. IntroductionThis lab was performed to determine the composition of Magnesium oxide. The crucible was weighed with and without the magnesium, and before and after the combustion reaction. This was helpful in finding the percent of oxygen that was introduced to the magnesium during the combustion. The percent of the oxygen was then used to find the percent composition of the Magnesium oxide. Experimental Data●A strip of Magnesium metal was burned to observe the color and intensity of the flame●The crucible was cleaned then dried by heating with a bunsen burner, and find the mass, repeat until mass measurements are close to the same.
