The United States is a contradiction. Its
founding principles embrace the ideals of
freedom and equality, but it is a nation built on
the systematic suppression of people of color.

Many of the country’s laws and policies made
were to prevent the full participation of the
people of color.

As a result of these policies, many people of
color, especially the black people continue to
endure discrimination in the electoral process
after about 150 years after the abolition of
slavery.
