Terry Fox Research Paper Rough Draft It was not something new for somebody to endeavor to run across Canada, yet for somebody to do that with an artificial leg, that was a circumstance that was very different. Terry Fox was an athlete who lost his leg to Osteosarcoma, which is a form of bone cancer, when he was only eighteen years old. He decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry Fox has become an example of a person who has overcome any difficult time that stood in his way. He showed a lot of courage as he shoved any doubt that anyone had of him running across Canada aside while he showed what he was capable of doing. Terry Fox has shown the world that perseverance will pay off if you work hard enough to achieve your goals. He is an example of one of the nation’s greatest heroes. Terry Fox is not only a legend in his own right but also an inspiration to people around the world. Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28th, 1958. His childhood years were spent in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. Terry had an older brother Fred and a younger brother and sister, Darrell and Judith. Betty, Terry’s mother, recalled that when Terry was a toddler he would stack wooden blocks constantly. If they fell down, he would continue to try to stack them again and again until they stayed put. Even as a child, the qualities that would bring him success in later life were in place. Terry was determined and persistent. He developed patience as he was growing up, too. Once in a while Terry would set up a table-hockey game and create a schedule for the season. He would play for both the teams and would allow only a certain number of passes before he would switch sides and play for the other team. Terry would continue to play long past his attention span just so he could see who won. Few children had the same perseverance as Terry did. All the boys in the Fox family loved sports, and they all loved to win. Sometimes Terry and his brother, Fred would gang up on their father, Rolly while he was on the couch. They would try to wrestle him to the ground. Each one tried his hardest to get in the last punch, in spite of the fact that Fred and Terry would normally be in tears before the unpleasant fighting was over. When Terry was in Grade 8, Bob McGill, the P.E. teacher at Mary Hill Junior High School, perceived two youthful players: Terry and his companion, Doug Alward.
