Lecture 1 Exam on Friday Psychology is the systematic study of behavior and experience -word is derived from the Greeks Psyche= “soul” or “mind” Logos= “word” Goals of Psychologists: -understand, explain and predict behavior 3 major philosophical issues in psychology: 1) Free will vs. Determinism 2) Nature vs. Nurture 3) Mind vs. Brain 1) Free will = behavior is caused by an individual’s independent decision-making Determinism= everything that happens has a cause or determinant in the observable world 2) How do differences in behavior relate to differences in heredity and environment? -the influence of genes vs. aspects of the environment such as culture, expectations, and resources Both play a role -This shows up in every field of psychology 3) How is experience related to the brain? Dualism= the mind is separate from the brain, but somehow controls the brain and through it the rest of the body. Monism= the mind is generated by and therefore is inseparable from the brain What psychologists do: 3 main areas: -Teaching and research -Service providers to individuals -Service provides in organizations Major categories of psychological research Biological psychology
