Purpose Experiment includes the synthesis of Acetal: (4S,5R)-2,2-dimethyl-4,5-diphenyl-1,3- dioxolane from the diol: (meso)-hydrobenzoin and acetone under catalytic conditions with Lewis acid FeCl 3 . Product was extracted and recrystallized; reaction efficacy and structure was determined by H 1 NMR, melting point, and percent yield. Results and Discussion Reflux of solution containing 100 mg Hydrobenzoin, 3ml acetone, and 90mh FeCl 3 led to a brown colored solution. Extraction of the organic layer and isolation of the compound led to 0.013 g of product. Thus, this suggests a poor 10.95% yield. The poor yield suggest a very ineffective reaction with poor success. The melting point was observed at 132-134 ºC. The obtained value is close to the melting point denoted by literature of the starting material (137 ºC). The literature value for the product could not be found.
