Purpose The melting point of a substance is an important physical property that may be useful to chemists. Useful applications of the melting point include the identification of unknown compounds, determination of compound purity, and even the characterization of newly made compounds. The lab focuses on techniques to determine melting point and knowledge of impurity effects on compounds. Results and Discussion Urea melting point determination A small sample of approximately 2 mm of pure urea in a capillary tube was placed in a Mel-Temp apparatus to determine melting point. The Urea began to melt at 131°C and was completely liquefied at 134°C. The substance first began to get moist before it became a clear liquid. The second run yielded results in the range of 132°C to 135°C. The reported melting point of urea was 133.3 °C. 1 Although the experimental value was quite close, the range for pure compounds should not be more than one. This may be an experimental error caused by rapid heating which gave inaccurate thermometer readings. The samples also might have been slightly impure or too compacted to allow uniform heating. Cinnamic acid melting point determination A small sample of approximately 2 mm of pure cinnamic acid in a capillary tube was placed in a Mel- Temp to determine melting point. The cinnamic acid began to melt at 132°C and stopped melting at 134°C. The results yielded at the second run were 131°C to 133°C. The reported melting point value of cinnamic acid was 133°C. 2 The experimental results were consistent with the reported value. Melting point determination of urea and cinnamic acid mixtures 1:4, 1:1, and 4:1 mole ratio samples of cinnamic acid to urea were extracted and placed in separate capillary tubes. Their melting points were recorded in the Mel-Temp. For the 1:4 ratio of cinnamic acid
