Michel has written to his 3 friends (Denis, Daniel, and me (I could not find a name)) and requested their presence to he can tell them the story of his experiences in the recent past. The letter is being sent from the speaker “me” to his brother as he is describing Michel’s recent life. Michel got married at the beginning of the book without knowing his wife well and at the dying request of his father. (His mother died when he was very young, and he and his father were very close). He married Marceline in Paris, and they left to travel. They went to Marseilles and then Tunis. After traveling a short while, Michel falls ill and starts coughing blood. Marceline is determined to nurse Michel back to health. She moves him to Biskra and starts bringing children to meet Michel. (Bachir is the first child she
