Gurmessa Dagmawi EN101/A Mr. Coyle Thesis statement for definition essay Prostitution is known as the world’s oldest profession. Prostitution is a mixture between high to low class prostitutes. The lower class prostitutes are called the “streetwalkers” who are stereotyped as the druggies who have the abusive pimps watching them and who work for them. The higher class prostitutes are known as the escort service workers with their designer clothes and stylish apartments. A prostitute is woman or a man who engages in sexual intercourses for money . He or she sells one’s body in exchange from sex to money. Prostitution is not only looked at by woman but men also. Woman prostitutes are called “sex workers”. The men prostitutes who offer to other men customers are called “hustlers” or “rent boys”, and the other men who offer to woman customers are called “gigolos”. The men who run the prostitution business are called pimps, and the women who run the business of prostitution are called madams. Here are some facts about prostitution. The average age entry into the world of prostitution is of 13 to 14 years old. These young children are either recruited or coerced into prostitution. Some women start young because they were either abandoned and need the money or some have no job skills and are in need for the fast cash. About 80% of woman who live in the world of prostitution are raped. The majority of prostitutes become addicted to either alcohol or drugs. On an average of arrests for prostitution 70% of female, 20% of male prostitutes and 10% of clients are arrested. About 85 to 90 % of the arrests are street prostitutes. A lot of these women go through difficult times, some of them suffer from negative identities or lack of self esteem. According to a study about 76% of call girls commit suicide. Here are some myths about prostitution. Prostitution is a victimless crime; this is a myth because prostitution is a crime. It’s a crime because men, woman and children become a commercial enterprise which customers use the children prostitutes which commits a crime of child sexual abuse. Different acts can be submitted by the customers or the pimps, which they can sexually assault, rape, and sexually harass the prostitute. As the saying goes “once a whore, always a whore’’, it’s not as easy as we think to just stop being a prostitute. Most of the prostitutes are owned by pimps and must go through them
