GANGSTA 17/01/2008 12:02:00 Notes on Angels with Dirty Faces -The Dead End Kids – group of young actors, grew up in tough section of NYC –  break through when they were cast of “Dead End”. Historical background – depression, oct 1929 (stock market crash)  Worried about what was wrong with the country people admired gangsters because they were so aggressive to get what they  wanted out of life and deal with the conqsequences – fuck what was happening in the  country – they were going to live their lives the way they wanted to the big three – little Caesar, scarface, public enemy RKO films during this period – made about 25 gangster films from this period  Sidestreet – family drama, 3 brothers (raqueteer, cop, doctor), tons of friction and  drama. Think:  we own the night Night parade – set in the world of the prize fight, professional boxing, a lot of  films like that, all end up dealing with a boxer who is tempted or forced to throw a fight  by the gambling interests at the time – this is what happens in this movie RKO made several gangster revenge dramas: Framed – a woman sets out to get revenge against corrupt policemen who have  murdered her father Conspiracy – a brother and sister conspire and work together to try to bring down  a drug ring that is responsible for their father’s death. Shooing straight Young donovan’s kid In both films a child appeals to the better side of a tough guy – causes him to  reform and turn straight and they want to help bring this kid up so he won’t follow in the  footsteps.

1931 paramount city streets – gary cooper playing a guy from the west, found  stranded in the east, gets involved in the underworld, the other guys in the rackets think  he’s getting too important so the guys take him for a ride, but uses his western skills he  gets away from them, gets the girl heads back west.  Blondie Johnson – 1933 – rare film in which a woman has the starring gangster  role. Depression provides the motivation and background. She wathches her mother die  of pneumonia – been evicted from their apartment. She gets no help from anyone. She
