Schizophrenia and psychosis.Schizophrenia is characterizedby experiences of psychosis.This means that people haveexperiences where they are‘out of touch with reality’.2
DSM 5 Diagnosis.The presence of 2 (or more) of thefollowing, each present for a significantportion of time during a 1-month period(or less if successfully treated), with atleast 1 of them being (1), (2), or (3):(1) delusions,(2)hallucinations,(3)disorganized speech,(4)grossly disorganized or catatonicbehavior,(5)negative symptoms.(American Psychiatric Association, 2013)3
DelusionsDelusionsare defined as beliefs that conflict withreality. Delusions are one of the most commonsymptoms of schizophrenia. These beliefs mightinclude:Persecutory delusions:When a person believes aperson, group, or organization is mistreating or harmingthem despite contradictory evidence.Somatic delusions: When a person believes they havean illness or their body is affected by a strangecondition, despite contradictory evidence.Grandiose delusions: When a person believes theyhave superior abilities or qualities (i.e. talent, fame,wealth) despite no evidence.(Glatt et al., 2019)4
Hallucinations.Hallucinationsare defined as experiences and sensations thatare not comprehensible to others. To the person experiencingthem, however, they may seem real, urgent, and vivid. Roughly70% of people with schizophrenia will experience hallucinations.Auditory hallucinationsare most commonly experienced bypeople with schizophrenia and may include hearing voices—sometimes multiple voices — or other sounds like whispering ormurmuring. Voices may seem angry or urgent and often makedemands on the hallucinating person.Visual hallucinationsinvolve seeing objects, people, lights, orpatterns that are not actually present. Visualizing dead lovedones, friends or other people they knew can be particularlydistressing. Perception may be altered as well resulting indifficulty judging distanceOlfactory hallucinationsinvolve the sense of smell or taste,both good or bad, that are not actually present.Tactile hallucinationsare feelings of movement or sensation onyour body that are not actually present such as hands on yourbody or insects crawling around or inside you.5
Disorganised Speech.Schizophrenia can cause people to havedifficulty concentrating and maintaining a trainof thought, which manifests in the way they speak. People with disorganized speechmight speak incoherently, respond to questions with unrelated answers, say illogicalthings, or shift topics frequently. Signs of disorganized speech involve the following:6Loose associations: Rapidlyshifting between topics with noconnections between topicsPerseveration: Repeating the samethings over and over againMade up wordsthat only havemeaning to the speakerUse ofrhyming wordswithoutmeaningWhen cognitive disorganization issevere, it can be nearly impossibleto understand what the person issaying.
