14/11/2007 11:34:00 Continuation of Last Lecture Metastasis Tumors can be benign (positve sign) o Tumor has stopped growing and is enclosed in the membrane Malignant Cancers o Cells do not look at all like sibling cells Spreadable throughout the body They spread through metastasis cells squeeze into blood vessels and spread throughout  the body via plasma o Angioenesis Makes blood vessels we WANT to make blood vessels tumors know that it is helpgul to have blood vessels to surround  the tumor.  tumors send out signals that attract blood vessels towards them. tumors reuse these signals in order use them to “feed off of” drugs that treat cancers cut off the supply o Cancer is tough to eradicate Cancer is a disease of our own cells it is us turning against outrselves drugs that kill cancer kill normal cells

usually when you get infected, we have immunoresponse  against the infection (virus basteria,e tc) however, body does not have a strong response against cancer  cells there are hundreds of different cancers each cancer has to be treated in a lsightly different way Cancer Drugs cancer cells divide bu cell division when it shouldn’t be anti cancer drugs target fast dividing cells inhibits DNA synthesis you can target translation factors Chemotherapy targets dividing cells drugs also affect normal cells skin cells, and cause hair loss.  Endostatin, an andigenesis inhibitor, can cure certain solid  cancers got rid of tumor in rat not as effective in humans, but may be more successful  in the future  Carcinogens are coumpouds that cause cancer by butating our  genes protooncogenes promote cell dicision and be activated or  amplied to become cancer  Tumor suppressor genes act to prevent cell division. Both are  lost/deleted in cancer Cancer requires the activation of oncogenes Plant Growth and Development
