Definition 2 An essay is a multiple-paragraph [¶ ] composition in three parts that develops a purpose The purpose of an essay is often stated in one sentence called the thesis 1-3-1 itself is a term that describes the three parts and the number of ¶s per part Each ¶ is indented five spaces or on tab—this signals to the reader that you are moving into another phase of the paper
