Tuesday January 17, 2017 Ideologies Ideologies offer meaning and identity in a world that remains devoid of ultimate meaning/ does not provide the answers to the meaning of life and the direction which society is takingIdeologies seem/ are inescapable in the context of modern secular societies (religion no longer structure society - secular)Belief remains in society, but it is an individual’s choice and it does not structure society Social and political functionOffer a guide to judgement and actionoIdeologies will act as a guide post oIf you adhere to an ideology you will behave and think in a certain wayAnother function is to offer the individual a clear identityoYou are acquiring a predetermined identity that will entail beliefs and behaviouroThis will also allow people to establish relations of solidarity with other people who share that same ideology - Comrade - for people who partake in that ideology it becomes more than a superficial relationshipIdeologies are a necessary component of modern political life despite the fact that every 20-30 years or so a philosopher etc will proclaim ideology to be deadThere are 3 risks associates with ideological thinking 1.We know that ideologies will deform realities, because all ideologies deform reality we need critical analysis; we need to look at statements and be able to see what is behind these statements; the critical analysis of ideologies is necessary to unmask the meaning contained in ideological statements 2.Ideologies offer a ready-made answer to the most basic yet important questions of human life/ existence, because of this they also offer moral comfort and a sense of security in an increasingly complex and opaque world; by the same token ideologies can
lull the human mind (calm by deception), it can make us less open to questioning and less open to interrogating our assumptions and our certitudes. Because they offer these answers they can ruin the possibility of critical thought3.Ideologies are presented as being the Truth. They do so because they offer universal and necessary truths. For those who are true believers of an ideology, this Truth must beimposed on others, it must be imposed because it is the Truth. In fact, all ideologies will seek to be imposed on others and upheld as being the truth and we can say that in fact, contained within each ideology there is something as a totalitarian ideology, imposed with violence if necessary this Truth on others.
