Module Two: Short Paper
Observation or Experimental:
The study from the article: “Alcohol Consumption Among First Time Mothers and the Risk of
Preterm Birth” was an observational study. This is an observational study because those
conducting the study observed the individuals participating and did not make an attempt to affect
the outcome.
Methods:
The methods used to collect the data were through sending out invitations to all pregnant women
of 17-18 weeks’ gestation receiving an ultrasound via mail. Of the invitations that were sent out,
40% of the women responded and the study had a total of 112,768 participants. There were then
questionnaires that were sent out to all of the participants who agreed to partake in the study. The
questionnaires asked the women to respond with the amount of alcohol consumed alcohol over
the last three months. Variables were also added to this study, so on the questionnaire, women
also answered questions in regard to the amount of smoking she has done in her life, pre-
pregnancy height and weight as well as her maternal anxiety. The methods were appropriate for
