COMM 201: Communication as a Liberal Art FINAL Study Notes Rhetoric Three dimensions 1. Aesthetics/artistic : choosing more or less artistic way to show things; more pleasing to people, more important to you 2. Rational : the part that separates us from animals 3. Ethical : Every communication you choose is ethical; truth v. lie 3 philosophical conceptions of rhetoric 1. Pragmatic art : tools that allow you to communication effectively 2. Manipulating language : to persuade, nothing but B.S. 3. Epistemic : once you are aware of everything you can start to learn what things are through communication, rhetoric and language; there is nothing outside comm. Homer – Words have 3 functions: 1. Heuristic : discovery of information, insights, even ‘self-awareness’ 2. Eristic : power of words to engage, express, captivate, argue and injure 3. Protreptic : power of words to direct human thoughts, to persuade and activate others; getting them to think and act how we want them to Results of the development of the Greek city-states (“Poloi”) o Move from tribal to political culture o Development of courts, legal procedure and law suites o Time and money become available for study and reflection o Development of teaching class Sophists – the teaching class Traveling teachers who were paid to teach young boys Problems with studying the Sophists: o No primary sources o Traveling nature means most of their teachings were never written down in their lives o Most of the what we know are through their enemies (Plato/philosophers) Corax (teacher) and Tisias (student) o Corax teaches Tisias how to communicate General Presuppositions of the Sophists o Sophists did not leave any complete philosophical system, but there are several concepts that are fairly consistent among the sophists 1. Nomos : idea that law is based on agreement/convention 2. Kairos : (literally the appropriate time/season) for the sophist truth in a given case was dependent on the circumstance surrounding an event and the circumstance could always be debated 3. Two sides to each case, either could be argued effectively 4. 5. Through learning rhetoric one can learn ‘arete’ (aka virtue, excellence, practical wisdom) Teaching methods 1. Dialectic : sophists’ teaching method took the form of dialectic with teachers inventing arguments for and against a given proposition
