Major function of the respiratory system - to supply the body w/ O2 & dispose of CO2. To accomplish this function: 4 processes called respiration 1. Pulmonary Ventilation (“breathing”) -. Air is moved into & out of the lungs (during inspiration and expiration) so gases are changed and refreshed 1. External respiration -. O2 diffuses from lungs to blood -. CO2 diffuses from blood to lungs 1. Transport of respiratory gases -. O2 is transported from lungs to tissue cells -. CO2 is transported from tissue cells to lungs -. Cardiovascular system accomplishes this transport using blood as: Transporting fluid 1. Internal respiration -. O2 diffuses from blood to tissue cells -. CO2 diffuses from tissue cells to blood . Respiratory system is responsible for only the 1st process - but cannot accomplish its primary goal of obtaining O2 & eliminating CO2 = unless 3rd and 4th process also occur

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
