2/26/2008 1 Animal structure and function Structure and function • Focus on vertebrate and mammalian systems in this class A comparative approach Some of you will be getting more in your upper division courses, so consider this a tiny taste of what is to come! Tissues Several tissues working together form Definition: collection of cells and intercellular substances functioning together for a specialized activity . an organ Organs can be united into integrated organ systems. Exp/ circulatory, digestive… Tissue types: 4 major types of tissues Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous. •O rgans systems may have only one or several types of these tissues.

2/26/2008 2 Tissue types: Lining, glands, sensory structures All that enters the body and leaves the body must cross an epithelial – important in regulation! Classified by numbers of layers Epithelial Classified by numbers of layers ( simple or stratified ) and shapes of cells ( squamous, cuboidal, columnar ) Linings in the body, around organs, in tubes, contain and protect organs and organisms from microbes and fluid loss Figure 40.1 The structure and function of epithelial tissues Figure 40.1x Epithelial tissues Tissue types: • Relatively few cells in extracellular matrix • Binds and supports • Looser tissues containing Connective: cells, extracellular matrix, and secreted materials (fibers, fluids, ect.) • Fibers are comprised of protein • 6 different types:

2/26/2008 3 Tissue types: 6 different types: 1. loose connective tissue –f ibrob lasts /macrophages and fibers - collagen = multi-stranded protein fiber ls t i Connective: - elastin = elastic like protein - reticular = thinner collagen fibers Fibroblasts secrete matrix and fibers Macrophages phagocytized microbes and debris Figure 40.2 Some representative types of connective tissue Tissue types: 6 different types: 2. Adipose tissue – cells with big lipid drops - used for energy reserve Connective: - also pads organs -insu lates±body Figure 40.2 Some representative types of connective tissue
