Social psychologists have identified a number of predictors of attraction or falling in love. Explain how each of the following is associated with attraction. Also, provide an explanation for why each factor should lead to attraction. a. Proximity: the closer 2 people are physically the more likely they are to meet and become attracted. Mere exposure effect- a phenomenon in which repeated exposure to novel stimuli tends to increase an individual’s liking for such stimuli b. Similarity: attitudes, values, personality, physical attractiveness, preference for activities) c. Reciprocity (of liking): the principle that when we are recipients the expressions of liking or loving, we tend to respond to kind. d. Physical attractiveness: physical beauty which is a powerful factor in attracting lovers to each other Which factor(s) do you think would be especially likely to lead to sexual attraction? What other factors not listed would likely lead to sexual attraction? (For example, what color should you wear?) Should wear red.-color of attraction Aesthetics (we enjoy looking at someone beautiful) What is beautiful is good stereotype we assume that attractive people have many other desirable characteristics Evolutionary/unconscious factors: we may (unconsciously be attracted to someone attractive because we assume appearance is an indicator of persons health and fertility. 2. It is becoming more common to meet partners online. However, people can have diverse experiences with online dating. The authors of the online reading, “Dating in a Digital World” give advice about ways to gain better experiences from seeking a partner online. What are some of the steps and advice they give? Set limits Monitor your mindset Cast a wide net Communicate with care Don’t bet on matching algorithms Ride tinder wave Don’t wait a long time, don’t look at a lot of profiles, keep it simple. 3. The box on pp. 200-201 in your text highlights some research done by your professor many years ago on gender differences in mate preferences.
