Model: We will represent the wood block as a particle, and use the model of kinetic friction and kinematics. Assume w sin q > f s , so it does not hang up at the top. Visualize: The block ends where it starts, so x 2 = x 0 = 0 m. We expect v 2 to be negative, because the block will be moving in the – x -direction, so we’ll want to take | v 2 | as the final speed. Because of friction, we expect to find | v 2 | < v 0 . Solve: (a) The friction force is opposite to v , so r f k points down the slope during the first half of the motion and up the slope during the second half.
