STAT E-50 - Introduction to Statistics Sample Midterm Examination Questions I. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) , a progressive disease that deprives a person of central vision, is the leading cause of blindness in older adults. In a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (Jan. 1998), researchers investigated the link between AMD incidence and alcohol consumption. Each individual in a national sample of 3072 adults was asked about the most frequent alcohol type (beer, wine, liquor, or none) consumed in the past year. In addition, each adult was clinically tested for AMD. The results are shown below: Clinical Diagnosis Most Frequent Alcohol Type Consumed AMD No AMD Totals None 87 878 965 Beer 30 400 430 Wine 51 1,233 1,284 Liquor 20 373 393 Total 188 2,884 3,072 Source: Obisean, T. O., et al. “Moderate wine consumption if associated with decreased odds of developing age-related macular degeneration in NHANES-1.” Journal of the American Geriatrics Society , Vol. 46, No 1, Jan. 1998, p. 3 1. Which variables are quantitative? Which are categorical? 2. Identify the W’s for this study: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Explain fully and clearly, and show any calculations. 4. Based on this study, find a 95% confidence interval estimate for the percent of adults with AMD. Be sure to show that you have checked all conditions.
