3U.S. Customs and Border ProtectionPrior to September 11, 2001 the major responsibility of the former U.S. Customs Service was to administer the Tariff Act of 1930. Many consider the area one of the most dangerous along the border, with numerous reports from U.S. Border Patrol agents of being spit on, having rocks thrown at them and gunfire. 7Organizational StructureThere are 20 Field Operations Offices20 Field Operations Officesin the United States that provide centralized management oversight and operational assistance to 327 U.S. ports of entryports of entryand 15 pre-clearance offices. Established geographically by region, Field Operations Offices serve as the spokes of a wheel for CBP Headquarters to distribute key policies and procedures to field staff. Field Operations Offices provide guidance to their regional ports and ensure the dissemination and implementation of core CBP guidelines.

8Organizational StructurePorts of Entry:Ports of Entry:A "Port of Entry" is an officially designated location (seaports, airports, and or land border locations) where CBP officers or employees are assigned to accept entries of merchandise, clear passengers, collect duties, and enforce the various provisions of CBP and related laws.
