Lesson 1 Grammar (Traditional) 1. The Verb 姓 姓 is usually used as a verb. When it is used is a verb, an object must follow it. S + 姓 (V) + O. 你姓什麼﹖ 我姓李﹐不姓王。 2. Question end with 嗎 When 嗎 is added to the end of a statement, that statement is turned into a question. Statement + 嗎 ﹖ 你是老師嗎﹖ 李友是美國人嗎﹖ 3. Question end with 呢 呢 often follows a noun or pronoun to form a question when the content of the question is already clear from the context. Statement , Noun/Pronoun + 呢﹖ 我是中國人﹐你呢﹖ 我媽媽是老師﹐你媽媽呢﹖ 4. The verb 是 S + 是 + O. 是 is usually negated with 不. S + 不是 + O. 你是老師嗎﹖ 我不是老師﹐我是學生。

5. The Adverb 也 In Chinese, adverbs normally appear after subjects and in front of verbs. S + 也 + V + O. / S + 也 + 不 V + O. 我也是學生。 你是中國人﹐ 我也是中國人。 我也不是老師。
