Prof Simon Catterall Office 309 Physics, x 5978 smc@physics.syr.edu http://physics/courses/PHY102.08Spring PHY102 Thermal radiation All bodies contain atoms/molecules in motion Indeed the speed with which they move is related to the temperature (see later) The oscillating electrons will radiate EM waves All bodies at non-zero temperature emit energy as thermal radiation PHY102 Thermal equilibrium Conversely, all bodies absorb energy coming from EM radiation. Eg. standing in front of a fire, lying in the sun etc Indeed, all forms of life and almost all physical processes are driven by radiation from Sun Notice: to stay at a fixed temperature all bodies must both absorb and emit thermal radiation. PHY102 Blackbody radiation Idealised body that absorbs all radiation incident upon it is called a blackbody . Not just visible light, but UV, IR, X-rays, radio waves etc etc Emits also more efficiently than any real body Amount of energy E given by Stefan law E= AT 4 PHY102...
