Final Paper Art Criticism During my trip to San Antonio Museum of Art, I chose an American art piece called Passion Flowers with Three Hummingbirds by the artist Martin Johnson Heade in 1875. The medium that is used in this art works oil paint on canvas. The size of this piece is 17 ¼" by 22 1/8”. This piece of is a landscape with different types of trees, a viewer, may be able to identify one of the trees as a palm tree. The piece has grayish - white misty and foggy mountains in the distance. Brighter vibrant green was used for the leaves attached to the vine of the tree. Two smaller hummingbirds are green and pink the other larger hummingbird is purple which is seen as still-life. Seven pink flowers and only two of the flowers are in full bloom. Realism which is represented in this art piece, the need for displaying the truth and showing the real view of life that was absorbed by the artist. In Passion Flowers with Three Hummingbirds , the use of curved lines is present in the background to outline the mountains and the hummingbirds, branches, and the vines. Implied lines were used to outline the bloomed flowers. The use of wavy lines were used in the branches and vine. The use of dotted lines were used in the different trees in the background. This art piece displays a lot of organic shapes; the trees, leaves, flowers and vines and natural form is used in this painting as well. Light is a visual element that gives a visual illusion that makes an impact on the art piece. In this art piece value is present, it shows the contrast between the foggy misty mountains and the hummingbirds. Value also gives a visual path to view the focal point in this art piece. A component of light is color, it gives an important sense of emotion to the viewer, and it also creates the mood that are taking place in the art piece. The use of the brighter and more vibrant cool colors found in the hummingbirds, the flowers, and the vines seem to be closer to the viewer, and the background objects are dull with a lighter color. The use of these colors shows depth and volume in the painting as it draws the viewers’ attention to the focal point. Heade also

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
