Medical Marijuana Part 1 1. Describe the major features of the issue. For example, for a bill you should describe the major provisions, as well as who will be affected and how. o In 23 states and the District of Columbia marijuana is legal for some medical uses and some recreational use (Sides, 2015). According to Barth Wilsey, MD, who is a pain medicine specialist at the University of California Davis Medical Center, mentions that the use of medical marijuana could be used for people with headaches, diseases such as cancer or any long-term conditions such as glaucoma or nerve pain (Harding, 2013). Doctors may also prescribe medical marijuana to their patients to treat multiple sclerosis, nausea due to cancer chemotherapy, seizures, Crohn’s disease and some illnesses that cause serve nausea. Medical marijuana does have side effects which don’t last a long time; dizziness, drowsiness, short-term memory loss, and euphoria (Harding, 2013). Medical marijuana may be used by smoking, vaporizing, eating it in a form of a candy, or taken as a liquid extract underneath the tongue. o According to CNN Health article, medical marijuana have been used to help Alzheimer’s patients gain weight, and research found that it lessens some of the agitated behavior that patients can exhibit (Christensen, 2015). Also animal studies have shown that some marijuana extracts may kill certain types of cancer cells, while in a different studies
