Week 5 Discussion 2Manshon L. ShoularsENG 225: Introduction to FilmInstructor: David MakhanlallJanuary 25th, 2017The movie I chose to use for this discussion is The Hobbit: The Desolation ofSmaug. There are several reviewers on this movie. I chose the review of a critic from Rolling Stone Magazine named Peter Travers. I found his review to fit the approach of either Generic or Marxist. Peter failed to acknowledge the public’s reaction to the film. He did address the first movie in the series by saying it was a box office success, but I found no acknowledgement to this film. The reviews of the main points were ok but I think he missed the whole plot of this film by getting stuck on the dragon character. One phrase by Peter that made me think he would watch the movie again and recommend it toothers was “But, oh, that dragon. I'd endure another slog through Middle-Earth just to spend more time with Smaug” (Travers, 2013). Personally, I only rely on trailers and commercial spots to evaluate whether or not I might like a movie. Sometimes I read the description on the back of the film at the video store to see if I might like it. Travers, P. (2013). 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Movie Review.
