Introduction Hook: A hero is described as someone who stands out for their exceptional bravery and determination. Description of topic/issue: Many heroes exist in the universe, each with their own set of traits. This can include many things such as being courageous and taking risks. In the book Holes, we see how many of the characters have faced challenges/hardships. Hector Zeroni, or as people call him “Zero,” is the deuteragonist in the book Holes, and we see how he overcomes many hard situations throughout the novel; such as facing brutal challenges against the harsh conditions of Camp Green Lake and much more. Thesis Statement: Zero is the most relevant hero in Holes because of his immense perseverance, bravery, and resiliency. Body Paragraph 1 1st paragraph Topic Sentence: In the story, Holes, Zero shows endless amounts of perseverance. Evidence 1: For example, he survived for more than the expected day or two off of sploosh. Sploosh were jars of Katherina Barlow’s famous peaches that had been there for many years. Evidence 2: When Stanley, the novel’s protagonist, escaped to find Zero, he was shocked when he saw what he looked like. Zero had a half-rotten jack-o'-lantern face with a gruff, frail voice and almost white lips. His eyes seemed sunken, and his smile drooped. As he spoke, his tongue seemed to flop about aimlessly in his mouth, as though it was continually getting in the way (page 68). This tells us despite struggling to
