1 Student ID: 003540473 Method Participants Participants in the study included 17 (3 males, 14 females) undergraduate psychology students who participated in the study as a course requirement. Design The study was a within subjects design with two independent variable levels. The independent variable was the relationship between the meaning of a word and the color that it was written in. The two levels of the independent variable were an incongruent or neutral relationship of the words on each poster to the color it was written in. The dependent variable was the student’s response time, in seconds, that it took to say the color of the words listed. Materials The materials used for this study included a stopwatch that reported time to the millisecond to accurately time each participant’s response time, tape that marked the floor where each participant stood, a sheet of paper that each participant had in order to keep a record of their own times, a procedure sheet that included detailed directions that each experimenter read verbatim to the participant, and two posters.
