The Republic of Gilead is an extreme religious governed society where everything revolves around reproduction. All of the women have specific functions and these duties represent the sexist views of what women are supposed to do. Marthas are to take care of household chores, such as cooking and cleaning. Men are called Commanders and their job is to impregnate women and if their wives are infertile, a Handmaid is brought into the house for nothing more than to become pregnant and have a healthy baby. None of the women have an identity apart from their duty and the Handmaid even loses her name, becoming “Offred” or Of each new Commander. 2. Birth Day is important to the entire Republic of Gilead because increasing population is the goal of the society. Bringing all the women together for the birth is supposed to make the Handmaids eager to become pregnant and have a healthy child because it ensures “security”
