Throughout the book, Offred talks about her husband and interactions with men in general before Gilead changed everything. She questions whether all men always controlled women and if that is why it was so easy for the government to change everything so abruptly. When Offred describes the day she lost her job as well as her money, she says that having bank accounts also made this transformation easier than it would have been when people used cash. 2. I don’t believe that Attwood’s book is criticizing Christianity, or religion at all. Rather, she is describing a theocracy and the outcomes of radical religious beliefs being implemented into government. Attwood shows this towards the end of the book when Offred is praying to the god she still believes in, and says that she doesn’t believe He intended any of it to happen. There are also many times where Offred talks about how they are taught to believe the Commanders when
