As the last of the NH 3 was added, the solution turned black. When a magnet was placed under the beaker, a black precipitate formed on the bottom of the beaker, while the solution itself changed from black to light brown. After the surfactant was added and the excess fluid drained off, a black liquid remained. The fluid was attracted to the magnet, and followed it around the beaker as the magnet was moved.
