Triiodide ions are generated in solution by reaction of iodate ions with iodide ions in acidic solution: IO 3 - (aq) + I - (aq) I 3 - (aq) Triiodide ions can be titrated with a sodium thiosulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 3 ) solution. The products are iodide ion and tetrathionate ion, S 4 O 6 2- . a) Balance the equation for the reaction of IO 3 - with I - . b) A sample of 0.6013 g of potassium iodate was dissolved in water. Hydrochloric acid and solid potassium iodide were then added in excess. What is the minimum mass of solid KI and the minimum volume of 3.00 M HCl required to convert all of the IO 3 - ions to I 3 - ions? c) Write and balance the equation for the reaction of S 2 O 3 2- with I 3 - in acidic solution. d)
