Close Reading Strategies-  write on the text adapted from iTeachiCoachiBlog Close Reading Strategies stick post-its on the text Close Reading Strategies  on notebook paper  1. Number the paragraphs in the left hand  margin. 2. Chunk the text by drawing horizontal  lines between paragraphs.  Divide the  introduction from the body.  Divide the  conclusion from the body.  Divide the  body into smaller sections. 3. Underline and circle...with a purpose.   Ideas: -underline and label the thesis or claim; -underline key terms (repeated ideas  that seem essential to understanding the text) -circle the names of sources, power  verbs, or figurative language. 4. Left-hand margin- Label the chunks.  “Claim”; “Body paragraph about  _____”. Then write a brief  summary  phrase of each chunk (10 words or  less). 5. Right-hand margin- Interpretation and  Reaction to each chunk. -Use a power verb to describe what an  author is doing;  Ex.: “Comparing ______ to _______.” -or Represent the information with a  picture;
