British wanted to establish with Indians: 1. profit 2. get more land 3. spread Christianity- felt that their colonization would benefit Indians, cannot be forced - believed they could achieve these three goals if they had peaceful relations with Indians - they are consistently disposed- lose their land - How did that loss of land occur? o They didn’t fully understand what they were doing o They had a different conception of land ownership o They weren’t stupid o They acquired things that were useful: purchased goods from others, copper, beads- what to Europeans was just a glass bead, was of value to Indians o Trading land for beads seemed to be good for the Indians, they just had different values - Lots of fraud with Indian land purchases - Does the person selling have the right to sell? - Very few Indians signed the treaty of Nirachoga - The British lost their empire in America to a great extent because they failed to maintain order on the frontier - 1740s-1750s confrontations on Ohio river - George Washington in 1754 warned the French the leave, they didn’t leave anyway - Great War for Empire between British and France (1700s), French were essentially eliminated in the colonies o Colonials and Indians didn’t get along when the colonials started moving westward, where the Indians were located - Pontiac’s rebellion 1763 - 1764 - Pontiac- going up against terribly racist colonial settlers, preached a message directly against English settlers o Said white people and Indian people were of completely different backgrounds - British are left with vast territory, felt the need to keep military forces in the west o Asked that the colonists paid a portion of the cost of these troops because of their bad economy o “No Taxation without representation” is their response, hence the
