CHP 1 Practice Problems: 1.1-27, 31, 33-35, 39-40. 1.0 Simple Model for Chemical Bonds An overview of Organic Chemistry including a simple depiction of the structure and bonding in organic chemistry is presented. Much of the material is a review of general chemistry. 1.1 Field of Organic Chemistry Organic chemistry is the study of compounds of carbon (H, N, O, Cl, Br) 1.2 Simple Atomic Structure The nucleus is composed of proton (+ Charge) and neutrons (neutral) which provide most of the mass of the atom. The electrons (- Charge) are in a shell surrounding the nucleus. 1.3 Ionic Bonding Atoms gain or lose electrons to arrive at the same number as one of the noble gasses. This bonding is most common between metals and non-metals.
