UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Instructor: J. P. Moehle Spring 2016 CE 120 - Structural Engineering Lecture Problem Assignment No. 8 Date: 28 May 2016 Due: 11:10 am, Monday 4 April 2016 Problem 1 - Draw influence lines for the quantities as specified below: (a) Reactions at A and C, and the shear and moment at B. (b) The shear and moment at A, B, and just to the left of C. Problem 2 (a) For the beam in Problem 1a, determine the maximum moments and shears at point B. (b) For the beam in Problem 1b, determine the maximum shear in the hinge at point B. For both cases, uniformly-distributed dead load is 2 klf, uniformly distributed live load of 3 klf, and there is one movable live load of 10 kips, all acting downward. Use the influence lines both to identify the loading and to determine the quantity of interest. If both positive and negative values are possible, provide answers to both. Tabulate your solutions neatly.
