Many events of such political struggle led up to the Civil War between the two sides. Some of these events included the Dred Scott decision, The Compromise of 1850, and Kansas-Nebraska Act. In 1857, a slave by the name of Dred Scott went to the court in Missouri in order to sue for his and his family’s freedom. Scott went with his master to the North in St. Louis and then hismaster died so he assumed that he was a free man. His case went to the U.S. Supreme Court and was rejected with a vote of 7-2.
