RELIGION Key elements of definition 1. Religion is a form of culture. Culture consists of the shared belief, values norms and ideas that create a common identity among the group of people. Religion shares all those characteristics. 2. Religion involves beliefs that take the form of virtualized practices. Religions thus have a behavioral aspect special activities in which believers take part and that identify them as members of the religious community. 3. Perhaps most import, religious provides a sense of purpose a feeling that life is ultimately meaningful. It does so by explaining coherently and completely what transeds or over shadows everyday life, in ways that other aspects of culture (such as an educational system or a belief in democracy) Functions of religion 1. Helps one deal with the unknown. 2. Enables people adjust to certain situations. 3. It provides a belief system to use with situations that are difficult to accept. 4. Its functions is to provide a perspective, a new point and a way of looking at the world. 5. It serves as an integrative function in that it promotes solidarity among members. 6. It functions as an agent of soual control in that religious group asset moral authority and attempt to provide guidance.
