To begin , McPherson breaks down how “revolution” relates to the Civil War by discussing the basic definitions of the word . He determines the Civil War was indeed revolutionary due to the fact that “no other period of American history witnessed anything like so great a rate of relevant change” and that we should define “revolution” simply as the overthrow of the existing social and political order .
