Courtney Maxwell English 112 Kelly Thomas February 2 nd , 2015 Inquiry 1 Proposal I am interested in the poem “O Captain, My Captain” by Walt Whitman because the entire poem is a long extended ode to President Abraham Lincoln. I also find it pretty fascinating that certain words and the Captain in the poem are actually extended metaphors. For example, the Captain represents Lincoln, the ship, the United States, and the “fearful trip” referring to the Civil War. There are certain tones and themes throughout the poem that make it more noteworthy and real in a sense. For example, there are two conflicting themes in the poem; excitement and grief. Excitement over the end of the Civil War but also sadness that the president has been killed. It’s also important to note on how the poem is structured. There are three stanzas each with 8 lines each and with two very different narrations in each stanza. The first 4 lines of each stanza describe a ship coming in to dock and are longer and more narrative that the last four. I imagine the last four stanzas represents the sailor’s grief and his thoughts as
