Application of the Roy’s Adaptation Model to Practice
In this paper, I will discuss Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model and its application to
practice.
Roy’s Adaptation Model’s Purpose in Practice
Roy's Adaptation Model supports nursing practice in all clinical environments. Direct and
indirect nurse-to-patient care is present in the clinical setting. Roy's Adaptation Model (RAM)
guides the nurse through critical thinking. The nurse and patient have a unique interaction
because it focuses on the nurse caring for the patient and their needs. This relationship is based
on the nurse assessing behaviors thoroughly, and the patient seeks care for the desired outcomes.
Roy’s Adaptation Model Operationally Defined in Practice
The concept of interest in this theory is individuals adapting to a constantly changing
environment. The clinical setting defines the operational concept by following a nurse, gathering
patient data, identifying the adaptive system's needs, and then choosing to execute nursing care
and evaluation approaches. An example of using RAM is for a patient with a past medical history
of diabetes who develops a foot ulcer that leads to an amputation in the clinical setting. The
nurse will need to provide holistic care using RAM. The nurse is aware that in order for the
patient to overcome this situation, the patient needs direction from the modes of adaptation. The
nurse knows that to ensure adaptation, they must increase adaptation during health, and illness
