(1/22/07) What is Social Psychology? • Social psychology- the scientific study of the ways in which people’s thoughts, feeling, and behaviors are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people social influence- the effects that people have upon the beliefs or behavior of others • Because all people interact with other people— being influenced by them, influencing them— it is natural that we develop hypotheses about social behavior We are all susceptible to hindsight bias — once we know the outcome of an event, we have a strong tendency to believe that we could have predicted it in advance People who do crazy things are not necessarily crazy • The social psychologist studies social situations that affect people’s behavior. Occasionally, these natural situations become focused into pressures so great that they cause people to behave in ways easily classifiable as abnormal it is useful to try to understand the nature of the situation and the processes that are operating to produce the behavior people have a tendency to explain unpleasant behavior by attaching a label to the perpetrator, thereby excluding the person from “normal people” • dispositional attribution- the assumption that a person’s behavior is the result of his or her personality (disposition) rather than of pressures existing in the situation ( situational attribution ) Chapter 9: Social Psychology as a Science (1/23/07) What is the Scientific Method?...
