Selected Answer: The characters are from a play that Pirandello wrote that was never finished. Therefore they are searching for an author that will use them. Their story is that the Father did not connect with the Mother the way that his secretary did, so ultimately he sent her to live with him. He sent his son to grow up in the country. He kept an eye on the new family, particularly on the stepdaughter, but eventually the new family moved away. The ex-secretary died and the family is forced to move back. The
