Chem 125 Dr. Retsek Winter 2008 Experiment 2: Aqueous Solubilities of Ionic Compounds Lab Report Due: Beginning of lab during week 3 (week of January 21 st to 25 th ). Part 2: Solubility of Molecules In the table below, record your observations when different alcohols were added to water. Title this table in the space below. Solubilities of Alcohols Alcohol Condensed Formula of Alcohol Observations Solubility S = Soluble I = Insoluble P = Partially soluble methanol CH 3 OH No change, no line, no distinction S ethanol C 2 H 6 O Small bubbles slowly floating to the top. No line or distinction. S 1-propanol C 3 H 8 O Small bubbles slowly floating up. No line or distinction. S 1-butanol C 4 H 10 O Three distinct lines. Above the top line is clear, about 15% of solution. Middle is white/opaque and 5%. Bottom is cloudy but translucent, 80% of solution. P 1-hexanol C 6 H 13 OH Two distinct layers, both clear. Solid line defining layers. Bottom layer has what looks like droplets of top layer trapped against walls. P In the table below, record your observations when salicylic acid is added to either pure water or basic water. Title this table in the space below Solubility of Salicylic Acid Salicylic Acid in … Observations Solubility
