Chem 125 Dr. Retsek Winter 2008 Experiment 9: Electrochemistry: Micro-Voltaic Cells, Reduction Potentials, Corrosion Lab Report Due: Beginning of lab during week 10 (week of March 10 th to March 14 th ). Part 1: Corrosion In the space provided, record your observations for each of the six iron nails. Draw a picture of each iron nail set-up Label the parts that turned blue and those that turned pink Label each metal Identify the cathode and anode Write out the reaction that took place at the anode and the reaction that occurred at the cathode. Observations Reactions 1. Iron nail with zinc metal What is the anode? Zinc anode reaction: 3 Zn 2+ (aq) + 2 Fe(CN) 6 3- (aq) → Zn 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 (s) What is the cathode? Iron cathode reaction: O 2 (g) + 2 H 2 O (l) + 4e - → 4 OH - (aq) 5. Iron nail with copper wire What is the anode? Iron anode reaction: 3 Fe 2+ (aq) + 2 Fe(CN) 6 3- (aq) → Fe 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 (s) What is the cathode? Copper cathode reaction: O 2 (g) + 2 H 2 O (l) + 4e - → 4 OH - (aq) 9. Iron nail with copper wire and magnesium strip What is the anode? Iron anode reaction: 3 Fe 2+ (aq) + 2 Fe(CN) 6 3- (aq) → Fe 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 (s) What is the cathode? Magnesium cathode reaction: O 2 (g) + 2 H 2 O (l) + 4e - → 4 OH - (aq) 11. Scored iron nail What is the anode? Scored Iron anode reaction:
