Essay Prompt #2: Education Horace Mann’s was a well known educator and reformer of the nineteenth century. He thrived to make the educational opportunity attainable to all Americans. Mann’s believed that with the educated knowledge of reasonable judgments about public issues, a successful democratic self government would be made within the society. Horace Mann beliefs and values demonstrate the myth of education. He had an optimistic view of the education system thinking that with education, a person will have self improvement, strengthen and expand our minds to our own way of thinking, and to even make the society a better place. Clearly, this is not always the case since many students are different and learn differently. In the “Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education,” he states that “Education must prepare our citizens to become municipal officers, intelligent jurors, honest witnesses, legislators, or competent judges of legislation—in fine, to fill all the manifold relations of life.” Here, you can see what his
