Travis Marziani Anthropology 103 Project Essay Professor Malley The Mighty Roman Empires Culture Rome and the Roman people may have been the most successful people of all time, and they like any group owe a good amount of that to their great culture. The Romans had an elaborate social structure, which helped the rich get richer and helped people born into a families that hindered their success get around the problem. Their religion was a pagan religion with multiple gods, however they would continually adapt others gods into their own religion. The daily life a roman is more like our society then many would think, involving work school and play. Roman culture is a very interesting culture consisting of three main areas their social structure, their religion and their daily life. The social structure of Romans was a very interesting one in which the father was the head much like many would consider modern day families and consisted of his sons and or daughters, his slaves, the wives of his sons, and his wife. The father being the head of the household and family structure seems to be a very normal way of having things done, this is due to many reasons but most is that he has created the family with his power and prowess and that he is the more dominant of the mother and the father. The wife is of course as we would suspect the women that the father marries, which he would not always have ownership over unless the marriage was sub manu. Sub manu means that the father of the women gave up rights to his daughter and the new husband

has now become her master. Next are the children of the father which consisted of his sons which the father would have great happiness over because the son would bring in more people to the family via marring them. There also consisted of the daughters which were not met with as great of joy due to the fact that the father would raise this child and then she would get married off and then become under some other fathers family. Another reason daughters were not thought of as to be as good in the eyes of their fathers were that they could not carry on the name and they could not fight for their country in the honor of the family. Also part of the social structure of the family were the slaves of the father, the slaves were often the spoils of war, after one nation Rome in this case
