IOE 265 W2007 HW #8 Solutions Due: Mon April 9 at 9:00 AM (beginning of lecture) Please include your name, UM ID and lab section time in your written homework assignment. You may work with other students to discuss problem approaches and check answers, but you may not copy another’s work or refer to solutions from the Instructor’s manual or solutions from previous semesters. Please be sure to staple your assignment if it includes multiple pages. All problems are from the Devore text, 6 th edition. 1. (2 points) p. 290, problem #6. a. (1 point) The CI half-width is z .05 " / n = (1.645)100/5 = 32.9 . This gives a 90% CI for the true average yield point of 8439 ± 32.9 = (8406.1, 8471.9). b. (1 point) Instead of using z .05 = 1.645, we should use z .04 = 1.75. 2. (2 points) p. 298, problem #14. a. (1 point) Since n=169, the CLT applies and we can construct a CI using our usual procedures. A 95% CI for true average fracture strength, based upon the observed sample mean and standard deviation, is x ± z .025 s / n = 89.10 ± (1.96)(3.73)/ 169 = (88.54,89.66).

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
